"What If" Art

Machine Learning has enabled us to ask the same questions in different ways. In this work, I use Kirchner's – Fränzi in front of Carved Chair, to ask some about Art History.
What If Fränzi was drawn across different times and geographies?

This project explores how AI generated (arbitary and adaptive style transfer) can help in asking questions and understanding art histories. I used tools like RunwayML and tensorflowjs to generate these 'adaptations' of the 'expressionist' work Kirchner's – Fränzi in front of Carved Chair. I chose artists known to be expressionists but in a different geography (like Souza from India) and artists leading to expressionist movement (like El Greco) and then artists who were known for their distinct style (Picasso and Van Gogh). To amuse myself more, I tried with a specific painting (like Guernica) to see how it would turn out. I even tried some generative methods with text.

This could be interesting from a formal or stylistic analysis of the works, but it ignores the theoretical and contextual aspects. However, how can we include that, remains a challenging question.

Now identify the styles :)
